AI Is Making You Work More, Not Less

I've been saying for months now that our obsession with AI productivity is quietly wrecking our health. Not because AI is inherently bad but because we're letting it set the tempo instead of the other way around.
And now we have the receipts.
Harvard Business Review just dropped an 8-month study that confirms what many of us have been feeling: AI doesn't reduce work - it intensifies it. Researchers followed 200 employees at a tech company and found that AI adoption led to three predictable outcomes, all of them exhausting:
· Task expansion - Workers absorbed jobs that used to require other people or departments
· Blurred boundaries - "Quick prompts" during lunch and late-night iterations became the norm
· Multitasking overload - Managing multiple AI agents while still doing human oversight created constant context-switching
The kicker? Nobody asked them to do this. They did it voluntarily because AI made "doing more" feel frictionless and even rewarding. Sound familiar?
This isn't an AI problem. It's a boundaries problem.
The research team calls for developing an "AI practice" - intentional norms around when to use AI, when to stop, and how work should and shouldn't expand. Peace means the presence of calm and the absence of relentless urgency and overthinking. Space to breathe, permission to pause (and to pee!), and freedom from the constant pull of our AI-enabled hamster wheel.
Stop to watch the sunrise or sunset. Get outside with your dog. Take hourly breaks away from your screen. Learn to sequence your tasks, prioritizing what needs immediate attention and what can wait. AI makes everything feel urgent. Your job is to decide what's actually important.
And find your community. Spend time with other like-minded professionals who can provide support and help you refine your AI peace practice. You're not meant to figure this out alone.
